My name is Alexa Villegas, and this is my brand Costalito de Amor. Growing up, I always dreamed of having a brand where I could express myself and share my love of fashion with the world. Costalito de Amor means “sack of love”, and is a nickname my abuelos (my grandparents) in Mexico call me. I was born in Toluca, Mexico, and moved to Victoria, BC when I was 3 years old. Growing up on the West Coast was incredibly special, but I always felt there was a huge lack of diversity and visible latin community. My parents were strong role models for my brother and me, raising us in a Mexican household and teaching us about our culture and traditions. Since moving to Toronto in 2021, I have felt that I have let part of my culture and traditions slip away from me. Costalito de Amor exists to help me stay connected to my roots, share my love for fashion, and celebrate my heritage with others. My pieces are heavily inspired by my culture and places in Mexico that mean the most to me. Sustainability is incredibly important to me and my brand. Every item at Costalito de Amor is handmade from reclaimed textiles, which are either pre-loved garments, scrap materials, or deadstock fabric.
